PART 2

In Part 2 we'll explore the 4 basic behavioral types and become familiar with the DISC 4-quadrant model that helps us recognize more easily the different behavioral types.

According to the DISC Behavioral Theory, we tend to display certain behaviors based on two factors: 1. our innate "drive," or pace at which we tend to perform our daily tasks; and 2. Our priorities regarding people vs. tasks. Therefore, (1) some of us tend to seem always active and on the go - also characterized by higher speech rate- while others seem to be more thoughtful and cautious, working and talking at a more moderate pace. And (2) Some of us mostly tend to enjoy being around people and socialize, while others tend to mostly enjoy spending time on tasks and concepts.

Notice that the words "mostly" and "tend" are underlined. This is to emphasize that we are talking about tendencies. No one really dislikes everything, and no one is fully accepting with everything. However, we are all different in our "tendency" of accepting things, people, concepts, etc.; as well as - a more visible trait - our speed of speech and speed of taking action.

Another visible characteristic of behavior is the fact that those who tend to be more accepting, are naturally more people oriented and therefore come across as more friendly and as more "people's person." And those who are less accepting, tend to enjoy working more with concepts and task oriented goals.

And this gives us the four quadrants and the 4 basic behavioral styles: Dominance (D), Influence (I), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C):

D Style( fast paced/task oriented) individuals are characterized by being seeming always active, have faster rate of speech, and are highly focused on tasks. On the job, they are the ones who seem to push everyone to perform and leave little room for personal chitchat. They know what they want, they go for it, and they expect those around them to do the same. D types often are perceived as real achievers, but are often perceived as cold and as having little consideration for the feelings of those around them.

I Style (fast paced/people oriented) individuals are characterized by fast pace - both in actions and speech - and a love to socialize. I type individuals are recognized by their high energy levels and their openness to interaction with others at any moment of the day. They tend to almost constantly smile and be ready to share a story or listen to others' stories (even though, listening is not the I types main strength - they rather talk than listen). They come across as friendly, enthusiastic, and passionate.

S Style (moderate paced/people oriented) individuals are characterized by being more cautious, thoughtful, and moderate paced, both in speech rate and physical movement. S type individuals enjoy being around people, and due to their characteristic of being more thoughtful and cautious, they are great listeners and come across as friendly and warm. S type people are the sweetest people in the world and we all enjoy having them around us. Due to the S type's tendency to be cautious and thoughtful, at times they come across to others as being a bit slow at performing certain tasks and slow at taking decissions.

C Style (modeate paced/task oriented) individuals are characterized by being cautious, thoughtful, moderate paced, and task oriented. C type individuals enjoy getting "lost" in tasks and do not like to be bothered when working. They tend to be very particular about doing an excellent job and are very organized. To the other types, the C type individuals come across as cold and overly nit-picky.

Keep in mind that very few of us are purely D, I, S, or C styles. The complexity of us humans lays in the blend of several of the types. However, there is always at least one dominant style that we display more naturally; for example, one could be a high S, with C being a secondary trait. Therefore this person could still come across as friendly, but at the same time will have high standards in performing the job at hand. Or a person with high D traits, could have I as secondary trait, which would make this individual a high-drive person with lots of tangible goals, yet comes across as friendly (most of the times). Rarely, some individuals have three high behavioral traits, and some have only one.

  • In Part 3, we'll look at common traits between each behavioral type
  • In Part 4 we'll explore sources of conflict among the four styles.
  • In Part 5 we'll explore what motivates each type and the falacy of the Golden Rule when it comes to effective communication
  • In Part 6, we'll take a look at some demotivating factors for different behavioral styles
  • In Part 7, you'll have a chance to take the FREE DISC profile/assessment to find out your behavioral style
